Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Meadowbank (Revoked)
ERF101577
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Meadowbank (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located in the locality of Meadowbank, approximately 15km northwest of Hamilton and 60km northwest of Hobart in the Derwent Valley region of Tasmania. The project was registered in July 2015 and covered a small area of 30.44 hectares. The site is situated near Meadowbank Lake, a significant hydro-electric reservoir on the Derwent River.
The project operated under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Reforestation Modelling Tool methodology. This type of environmental planting project involves establishing permanent native forests on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to commencement. The specific method used allowed for carbon sequestration to be calculated using computer modelling (the Reforestation Modelling Tool) rather than relying solely on direct field measurements, provided the planting density and species mix met specific stocking standards.
The Derwent Valley region is characterized by a cool temperate climate but sits within a distinct "rain shadow" caused by the western highlands, resulting in lower rainfall (approximately 500-600mm annually) compared to the western coast of Tasmania. The landscape typically supports grazing (sheep and cattle) and increasingly viticulture, with the area known for dry sclerophyll forests and grassy woodlands. Soils in this vicinity are variable, often consisting of texture-contrast soils derived from Triassic sandstone or Jurassic dolerite, and alluvial deposits near the river flats.
The project proponent was Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services Pty Ltd (AI Carbon), a carbon service provider that often partners with landholders and aggregators. The project name suggests a connection to Biodiverse Carbon, a subsidiary of Greening Australia, indicating this may have been part of a conservation-focused revegetation initiative. However, the project was revoked on 28 August 2017 under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which typically refers to a unilateral revocation by the Clean Energy Regulator, often due to eligibility issues or a failure to meet regulatory requirements.
