Cairns Carbon Farming Project

Project Information:

Cairns Carbon Farming Project is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located approximately 75km west-northwest of Charleville in south-west Queensland. It was registered in January 2015 and covers an area of 1,949.08 hectares.

Native forest from managed regrowth projects involve allowing native vegetation to naturally regenerate into a forest by ceasing activities that suppress regrowth, such as mechanical clearing or chemical destruction.

The Charleville area is widely known for extensive cattle and sheep grazing operations. The region experiences a semi-arid climate with lower annual rainfall, and the environment is generally characterised by the red earths, clays, and sandy loams typical of the Mulga Lands bioregion.

This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers, on land that was historically subjected to at least one comprehensive clearing for pastoral use. Interestingly, the project's proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd, was acquired by major environmental markets investor GreenCollar in July 2021 to further integrate carbon farming with Queensland's primary grazing businesses.
