Kendall River Station
EOP100968
Project Information:
Kendall River Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located on the north-western side of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, approximately 150km south of the major shipping port of Weipa. It was registered in December 2014 and covers a vast area of 267,954.84 hectares.
Savanna fire management projects involve the strategic and planned burning of savanna areas during the early dry season. By reducing the fuel load early in the year, the methodology aims to minimize the risk, extent, and severity of highly destructive late dry season wildfires, subsequently reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
The Cape York region is historically known for large-scale pastoral leases and cattle grazing. The area falls strictly within a high rainfall zone, experiencing abundant monsoonal wet seasons. The local environment features exceptional, fertile soils fed by extensive natural river systems including the Kendall, Sinclair, Archer, and Holroyd rivers, which provide the region with substantial groundwater and pristine surface water.
Interestingly, the entire property was recently purchased by the Queensland Government, resulting in the carbon project's proponent changing to the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation in January 2026. The government intends to transition the former pastoral station into a dedicated national park once negotiations on relevant Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) are finalized, focusing heavily on ecotourism and conservation. Additionally, this project previously held a Fixed Delivery contract (CAC244817) with the Commonwealth, which was successfully completed in June 2021 after delivering 50,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). To date, the project has generated and been issued over 254,000 ACCUs.
