Nimboy Carbon Farming Project

Project Information:

The Nimboy Carbon Farming Project is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) project located approximately 80km west of Charleville in the Murweh Shire of South West Queensland. Registered in January 2015, the project covers a significant area of 10,844 hectares. The property, situated within the Mulga Lands bioregion, is part of a landscape traditionally dominated by extensive pastoral activities, specifically grazing for sheep and cattle.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Native Forest from Managed Regrowth) Methodology Determination 2013. This methodology is designed for land that has been comprehensively cleared for pastoral use in the past but retains the potential to regenerate into native forest. To generate carbon credits, the project proponent must cease the mechanical or chemical suppression of regrowth, such as chaining or bulldozing, that was previously used to maintain the land for grazing. The vegetation regenerates from in-situ seed sources, rootstocks, and lignotubers, sequestering carbon as it transitions back to forest cover.

Environmentally, the region is characterized as semi-arid with variable, low rainfall typically averaging between 350mm and 450mm annually. The soils in this area are predominantly red earths and sandy loams, which naturally support Acacia aneura (Mulga) communities and other native shrublands.

An interesting commercial note regarding this project is its connection to Devine Agribusiness Carbon (DAC). DAC, founded by Dominic Devine, was a prominent developer in the Queensland carbon market before being acquired by GreenCollar in July 2021. Furthermore, the project held a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC739214) with the Australian Government, which was marked as completed in early 2023, indicating the project successfully delivered its contracted volume of abatement.
