Werrina Carbon Farming Project

Project Information:
Werrina Carbon Farming Project is a native forest regeneration project located approximately 65km southwest of Charleville and 40km northwest of Wyandra in South West Queensland. Registered in December 2014, the project covers 2,868 hectares within the Murweh Shire.
The project operates under the Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) methodology. Unlike environmental planting projects that involve active seeding, NFMR is designed for land that was historically cleared for pastoral use. The project generates carbon credits by ceasing mechanical or chemical destruction, such as chaining or blade ploughing, to allow the native forest to regenerate naturally from in-situ seed sources, rootstock, and lignotubers.
The region lies within the Mulga Lands bioregion, an area predominantly used for grazing sheep and cattle. The environment is semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450mm to 500mm. The soils in this area are typically soft red earths and sandy loams, which are well-suited to supporting the regrowth of native Acacia (Mulga) vegetation once clearing cycles are suppressed.
A notable aspect of this project is the transition in management; originally listed with Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd, the project proponent role was transferred to Brock and Katrina Hindmarch in 2021. This indicates a shift from an aggregator-led model to direct landholder management, a trend increasingly seen in mature carbon projects.
