Canegrass Carbon Farming Project 2

Project Information:
Canegrass Carbon Farming Project 2 is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located on Canegrass Station, approximately 100km northwest of Charleville in South West Queensland. It was registered in December 2014 and covers 7,951.76 hectares.
Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects under the 2013 Methodology involve the cessation of activities that destroy or suppress native vegetation, such as mechanical clearing or chemical spraying. By halting these suppressive activities, the project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. This is undertaken on land that has previously experienced at least one comprehensive clearing for pastoral use. To meet standard ACCU scheme requirements, the regenerating native forest must have the potential to reach a minimum of 20% crown cover and 2 metres in height.
The Charleville area is located within the Mulga Lands bioregion and is known for extensive pastoral operations, primarily cattle and sheep grazing. The environment is considered semi-arid with low and variable rainfall typically averaging around 400 to 500mm annually. Soils in this region generally consist of red earths, sandy loams, and heavier clay loams along floodplains and swales.
An interesting note about this project is its proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd. Founded by agribusiness consultants and graziers to help Queensland primary producers integrate carbon farming with active grazing, the company was highly regarded in the market before being successfully acquired in July 2021 by GreenCollar, Australia’s largest environmental markets investor. Canegrass Station itself remains active in both the beef industry, frequently selling Droughtmaster cross cattle at the Roma store sales, and the carbon space, hosting multiple "Canegrass Carbon Farming" projects across its vast pastoral lease.
