Greenpoint Landfill Gas Abatement Facility

Project Information:

Greenpoint Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is a landfill gas project located at the former Green Point landfill in the Central Coast region of New South Wales. Situated approximately 6 kilometers southeast of Gosford, the facility operates on a closed landfill site that has since been rehabilitated, with the surrounding area now characterized by residential suburbs, woodland remnants, and coastal reserves. The project was originally registered in August 2013.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. Landfill gas projects involve the installation of gas collection systems, comprising vertical wells and horizontal pipes, to extract methane generated by decomposing organic waste. This captured gas is then combusted (flared) or used to generate electricity, converting the potent methane into carbon dioxide and water, thereby significantly reducing the site's greenhouse gas emissions. As a "transitioning project," it was originally established under the earlier Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) before moving to the current Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) framework.

The Central Coast region is classified as a high-rainfall coastal environment, typically receiving over 1,200mm of rain annually. The local geology predominantly consists of Narrabeen Group sandstone, resulting in soil types that range from sandy loams to clays, which can influence gas migration and collection efficiency. The project captures gas from "legacy waste" (waste deposited before July 2012) and continues to manage emissions from the site long after its closure to active dumping. In 2021, the project proponent formally changed from AGL Energy Services to the site owner, Central Coast Council.
