Project Information:

Capture and Combustion of Landfill Gas at Dunmore Recycling and Waste Disposal Depot is a landfill gas project located at the Dunmore Recycling and Waste Disposal Depot in Dunmore, NSW. Dunmore is a suburb approximately 4km south of Shellharbour City Centre and roughly 100km south of Sydney. The project was originally registered in January 2014 and covers the waste management facility operated by Shellharbour City Council.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology typically incentivizes the capture of methane from decomposing waste to power electricity generators. However, corporate reports from the proponent, LGI Limited, describe Dunmore as a "small, regional landfill with a flare" where carbon credits are the primary revenue source rather than electricity sales. This suggests the project focuses on capturing and flaring methane to prevent it from entering the atmosphere, potentially utilizing provisions in the methodology that accommodate flaring or transitioning legacy projects.

The Shellharbour region is part of the Illawarra coast, known for its high rainfall and lush coastal environment. The soils in the Dunmore area are often derived from the surrounding volcanic geology (specifically Bombo Latite) or alluvial deposits near the Minnamurra River.

LGI Limited, a renewable energy and carbon abatement company, took over the project participation from Shellharbour City Council in 2020, although they have been involved in managing the site's biogas since 2013. A recent update from LGI noted the successful installation of 16 new gas wells at the site in just four weeks, significantly increasing the gas capture efficiency. The project previously held a carbon abatement contract with the Australian Government which was completed in June 2023.
