Towallum Soil Carbon Project

Towallum Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at Towallum, approximately 40km northwest of Coffs Harbour in the Clarence Valley region of NSW. It was registered in August 2026 and covers 2110.24ha.

Soil carbon projects involve storing carbon in agricultural soils by changing land management practices. The standard requirements for the estimation of soil organic carbon using measurement and models methodology involve establishing a baseline soil carbon level and undertaking at least one new eligible activity, such as pasture cropping, nutrient management, or altering grazing patterns. This is followed by subsequent soil sampling and modeling over time to verify carbon sequestration.

The Towallum area is known for agricultural operations such as cattle grazing and forestry. The area is considered a high rainfall, subtropical zone, and the soils across this hinterland region are generally fertile clay-loams, podzolic soils, and basalt-derived soils well-suited for pasture.

This project increases carbon in the soil within the agricultural system by re-establishing or rejuvenating a pasture by seeding or pasture cropping. It includes participation from Precision Pastures Pty Ltd, an independent soil and carbon services company based in the New England region. Precision Pastures uses spatial technology, satellite imagery, and custom-built soil sampling equipment to help livestock producers establish and audit end-to-end soil carbon projects.
