Project Information:

AA2026R_DownieL_S1S3 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 40km east of Hobart in south-east Tasmania. It was registered in September 2026 and covers an area of 138.89ha.

Plantation forestry projects involve establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation to long-rotation plantations, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. Standard requirements under the 2022 methodology mandate that the project establish and maintain a viable tree stocking density, maintain sustained forest cover, and continuously manage the trees for the commercial harvest of wood products. In this specific project, carbon is sequestered by establishing a new commercial plantation as well as avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation back to non-forested land, such as agricultural pasture.

The south-east region of Tasmania is well known for livestock grazing, cropping, viticulture, and extensive commercial forestry operations. The area experiences a cool-temperate climate with moderate rainfall, typically receiving between 600mm and 800mm annually. The local soils generally consist of sandy loams and podzolic clays, which are historically less suited for intensive agriculture but are highly productive for long-rotation commercial timber species.

The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions acting as the agent for the project proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. This project is part of the "ActivAcre" program, a state-wide initiative developed in partnership with global investment manager New Forests. The program leases underutilised portions of farmland to integrate commercial tree farming, providing landowners with a reliable, diversified income stream while delivering on-farm environmental benefits such as essential livestock shelterbelts and long-term carbon sequestration.
