Wyuna Carbon Project 2026

Project Information:
Wyuna Carbon Project 2026 is a Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings project located approximately 30km west of Arthur River in the Western Australian Wheatbelt region. It was registered in May 2026 and covers a project area of 1,123.17 hectares.
The Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology involves establishing and maintaining permanent native forest cover to sequester carbon. Standard requirements dictate that the plantings (in this case, native mallee eucalypt species) must be established at a sufficient stocking density to eventually achieve a minimum of 20% canopy cover and reach at least 2 metres in height at maturity.
The surrounding Wheatbelt area is well-known for broadacre agriculture, predominantly winter cropping (such as wheat and canola) alongside sheep grazing. The environmental conditions in this region are characterised by a semi-arid to medium rainfall climate with winter-dominant precipitation. Local soils typically consist of duplex sandy or gravelly loams over clay, which are highly suited to the hardy, deep-rooted mallee eucalypts selected for this project. The project's main activities focus on establishing these permanent mallee plantings to capture carbon and restore marginal agricultural land.
An interesting note regarding the project proponent, INPEX New Energy Business Australia, is their recent strategic push into decarbonisation. INPEX established this non-hydrocarbon business unit to pursue low-carbon opportunities and, alongside corporate partners like ANZ and Qantas, launched the "Wheatbelt Connect" initiative. This initiative aims to integrate strategic native revegetation into traditional broadacre farming systems, providing landowners with an alternative income stream on challenging, rocky soils while generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and boosting regional biodiversity.
