Mt Narra Narra Station Carbon Project

Mt Narra Narra Station Carbon Project is an agricultural soil carbon project located at Holbrook in the Riverina district of New South Wales, situated approximately halfway between Albury and Wagga Wagga. The project was registered in August 2026 and covers 4,440.16 hectares.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This methodology allows proponents to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by storing carbon in agricultural soils through the implementation of new management practices. For this project, the primary activities involve altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.

The eastern Riverina region around Holbrook is known for its highly productive agricultural corridors, primarily utilised for wool, prime lamb, beef cattle, and cropping. The area receives reliable, high annual rainfall (typically between 600 mm and 850 mm) and features a variety of soils, including Kurosols (strongly acid duplex soils), Chromosols, Kandosols, and Dermosols. These loam and clay-based soils are excellent for grazing but are often prone to sub-surface acidity which requires careful management.

An interesting note about this project is that the proponents, Michael and Anna Coughlan (trustees for Tarabah Land Trust), are well-regarded holistic and regenerative farmers. Since adopting holistic farming principles over two decades ago, they have ceased all cropping, haymaking, artificial fertilisers, and chemical treatments on their properties. Their cattle are rotated daily across 180 permanent paddocks, which they report has vastly improved soil biodiversity, virtually eradicated animal health issues, and drastically reduced production costs. Furthermore, since they implemented this planned grazing system, two endangered species, the plains-wanderer bird and pygmy perch fish, have been discovered on their land. Mt Narra Narra Station was also a featured property in "Earth Canvas," an initiative and exhibition that linked prominent artists (such as Jenny Bell) with regenerative farmers to showcase the complexity and beauty of sustainable land management.
