'Wykeham Carbon Project
ERF208785
Project Information:
Wykeham Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at the "Wykeham" property on North Boundary Road, approximately 6km northeast of Dunkeld in the Southern Grampians region of Victoria's Western District. It was registered on July 30, 2026. While the project area is officially listed as unknown on the registry, the underlying Wykeham agricultural property covers roughly 1,013 hectares.
Soil carbon sequestration projects using the Measurement and Models methodology involve implementing new or materially different land management activities to build soil organic carbon in agricultural systems. Baseline carbon levels are established, and subsequent increases are modelled and verified through physical soil sampling to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
The Dunkeld area in the Western District is well known for prime lamb breeding, cattle grazing, and broadacre mixed farming. The region benefits from reliable, temperate rainfall, averaging around 700mm annually, and features productive red gum country over fertile clay loam and volcanic basalt soils. The Wykeham project aims to increase carbon in this agricultural soil by altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.
Interestingly, the proponents, Michael and Anna Coughlan of the Tarabah Land Trust, are prominent holistic livestock producers who purchased the scenic Wykeham property in mid-2022 for $22.5 million. They are founding members of a farming group focused on regenerative, chemical-free agriculture and holistic grazing management principles. The Wykeham property itself boasts extensive frontage to the Wannon River and offers spectacular panoramic views of Mt Abrupt and Mt Sturgeon. They are running this carbon project with the assistance of Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, an aggregator and developer specializing in soil carbon baselining and measurement.
