Project Information:
Nippon2026R_GRTAggregation_S2 is a plantation forestry project located near Heywood, approximately 30km north of the major coastal city of Portland in the Green Triangle region of south-west Victoria. It was registered in May 2026 and covers an area of 589.63 hectares.
Plantation forestry projects involve establishing new plantations or managing existing forests for commercial harvesting. Standard requirements under the methodology dictate that projects must maintain appropriate tree stocking densities, actively manage rotation lengths, and sequester carbon in both the living forest biomass and the long-term harvested wood products.
The Green Triangle region is highly regarded for its diverse agricultural economy, primarily known for extensive sheep and cattle grazing alongside major commercial softwood and hardwood forestry operations. The area is classified as high rainfall, typically receiving between 700mm and 800mm annually. Soils across the region vary but are generally comprised of sandy loams over clay, gradational volcanic soils, and chromosols.
This project sequesters carbon by converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest into a long-rotation plantation forest to produce commercial wood products. The project's proponent, Nippon Paper Resources Australia Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of the global Nippon Paper Group, which manages large-scale timber operations and recently expanded its Australasian footprint via a 2026 softwood chip export joint venture. SFM Agribusiness Pty Ltd, an independent natural asset management company specializing in forestry and carbon analytics, is also a key participant assisting in the project's operations.
