Project Information:
AA2026R_PayneL_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located in southeast Tasmania, approximately 15 kilometres inland from Orford and 60 kilometres northeast of Hobart. It was registered in April 2026 and covers an area of 131.81 hectares. The surrounding region near Buckland, Wielangta, and Orford is well known for a mix of extensive commercial forestry operations and agricultural grazing.
The region experiences moderate to high rainfall which is highly suitable for robust timber production. The environment features soils typically composed of sandy loams and podzols, often overlaying dolerite or clay subsoils.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Plantation forestry projects typically involve establishing new plantation forests or managing existing ones for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Under this methodology, projects must maintain an appropriate stocking density to achieve a minimum forest cover of at least 20% crown cover and a mature tree height of at least two meters.
Specifically, this project sequesters carbon through two distinct activities. Under Schedule 1 of the methodology, it establishes and maintains a newly planted forest on previously non-forested land. Under Schedule 3, the project avoids the conversion of an existing plantation to non-forested land by continuing the active management of a previously established plantation. Both sections are intended for the commercial harvesting of wood products. The project is operated by SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust.
