Eastern Creek Landfill Gas Upgrade Project
ERF207461
Project Information:
Eastern Creek Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas emissions destruction and upgrade project located at Eastern Creek, approximately 35km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. It was registered in May 2026 and its exact area size is unknown, though it operates across an existing major landfill site.
Reducing Methane Emissions from Landfill Gas projects involve capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by decomposing organic waste, and combusting it via flares or to generate electricity. Standard requirements for this methodology dictate that emission reductions must go beyond standard regulatory baselines, which for this project involves upgrading an existing landfill gas collection system to increase the baseline capture and destruction of methane.
The Eastern Creek area is located in Western Sydney and is predominantly known for major waste management, logistics, and industrial operations, transitioning into urban residential zones like Blacktown. The region experiences moderate rainfall, averaging around 800mm annually. The local geology is defined by the Wianamatta Shale formation, meaning the soils are characteristically heavy clay.
This non-biomethane, non-safeguard LFG project was set up to capture and combust gas generated at the landfill from both legacy and non-legacy waste. Operated by LGI Limited in partnership with BINGO Industries at the Eastern Creek Ecology Park, the project activities prioritize emissions destruction and dispatchable electricity generation. Notably, the initiative supports a 15-year agreement that includes a 4MW renewable power station, which generates enough renewable energy to supply approximately 7,000 local homes while significantly reducing landfill odours and greenhouse gas emissions.
