Project Information:

Crookwell Aggregation_MWY_2026 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 25km north of Crookwell in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. It was registered in February 2026 and covers a project area of 1064.62 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology determination sequester carbon from the atmosphere as trees grow. Standard requirements for this method include establishing new plantation forests or converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation forests. Projects must demonstrate an overall increase in the long-term average carbon stock, and the project land must not have been cleared of native forest in the preceding seven years.

The Crookwell region's land use is heavily focused on primary production, specifically sheep and beef cattle grazing, potato farming, and renewable energy generation such as wind farms. The local environment is characterised by a cool climate with high and reliable precipitation, receiving an average annual rainfall of approximately 830mm to 860mm. The soils in the district are generally arable but feature fragile topsoils over clay subsoil profiles, typically situated on hilly to mildly undulating slopes.

This specific project sequesters carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest meant for the commercial harvesting of wood products. An interesting note is that the proponent, Midway Pty Ltd, and the other participant, Australian Carbon Products Pty Ltd, form one of Australia's largest woodfibre processing and carbon management groups. The establishment of this project not only generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) but also directly supports national initiatives aimed at increasing the domestic supply of plantation timber resources.
