The Hills Shire SSO Waste Diversion Project
ERF207021
Project Information:
The Hills Shire SSO Waste Diversion Project is a Source Separated Organic Waste project located in the Hills Shire local government area in the north-western suburbs of Greater Sydney, NSW. It was registered in March 2026 and, as an aggregated municipal waste operation across the council boundaries, covers an unknown specific project area.
Source Separated Organic Waste projects generate carbon credits by separating eligible organic material, such as food and garden waste, at the point of generation from a single waste stream. Standard requirements mandate that this waste is diverted from landfills and transferred to approved facilities for treatment using open windrow composting, enclosed composting, anaerobic digestion with biogas combustion, or process engineered fuel manufacture.
The Hills Shire area consists of urban residential zones, commercial centers, peri-urban agriculture, and natural bushland. The region is considered to have a moderate to high rainfall climate, and soils are generally Hawkesbury sandstone-derived sandy loams and Wianamatta shales (clay).
This project was set up as part of The Hills Shire Council's strategic transition to a new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) waste collection service. The expansion of waste diversion activities aligns with the NSW Government's mandate to provide all households with a FOGO service by 2030, aiming to halve organic waste sent to landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by turning the waste into valuable compost.
