Lochiel Carbon Project 7

Project Information:
Lochiel Carbon Project 7 is a soil carbon project located near the small township of Lochiel, approximately 130km north of Adelaide in South Australia. Registered on January 2, 2026, the project covers a project area of roughly 437 hectares. The site sits within the Mid North region, an area historically dominated by mixed farming operations, including broadacre cropping (wheat, barley) and livestock grazing (sheep).
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon Methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. Standard requirements involve establishing a baseline of soil carbon levels through physical sampling, followed by the implementation of new agricultural activities designed to sequester carbon. In this specific project, the proponent, AgriProve Solutions, is utilizing the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and the introduction of legume species into cropping or pasture systems. These activities aim to boost plant growth and soil biomass, thereby increasing the soil's carbon storage potential.
Environmentally, the Lochiel region is characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with a winter-dominant rainfall pattern, typically averaging between 350mm and 450mm annually. The local landscape often features calcareous sandy loams and red-brown earths, which can be susceptible to wind erosion and salinity, challenges that improved soil carbon levels can help mitigate by enhancing soil structure and water-holding capacity. Interestingly, this project appears to be part of a larger aggregation of projects in the area (Lochiel Carbon Projects 1 through 9), highlighting a significant, landscape-scale effort by AgriProve to drive carbon sequestration across this agricultural district.
