Lochiel Carbon Project 6

Project Information:

Lochiel Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon project located near the town of Lochiel, approximately 130km north of Adelaide in the Mid North region of South Australia. Registered in January 2026, the project covers a project area of approximately 560 hectares. The site is situated near the well-known Lake Bumbunga, a salt lake often visited for its pink hue.

The surrounding Mid North region is a primary agricultural zone characterized by dryland cropping, producing wheat, barley, and canola, and livestock grazing. The local environment is classified as semi-arid to Mediterranean, typically receiving between 350mm and 400mm of rainfall annually. Soils in this area are commonly red-brown earths or calcareous sandy loams; these soil types often historically possess low organic carbon levels due to intensive cultivation, presenting a significant opportunity for carbon sequestration through improved management.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon Methodology, which credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon stocks over time. To achieve this, the project activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address specific nutrient deficiencies and integrating legume species into cropping or pasture systems. These practices aim to boost plant biomass and nitrogen fixation, which in turn drives the sequestration of carbon into the soil profile. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.
