Plantare Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Plantare Carbon Project 1 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 30km northwest of Westonia in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region. It was registered in March 2026 and covers 104.13 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 Methodology Determination involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantation forests, or converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones, specifically for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Standard requirements for this method dictate that the project area must not have had native forest removed in the previous seven years. Furthermore, proponents must undergo geospatial monitoring and meet specific criteria for commercial timber production.

The Westonia area and the surrounding eastern Wheatbelt are traditionally known for broadacre dryland agriculture, primarily focusing on winter wheat cropping and sheep grazing. The region experiences a semi-arid Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, moist winters, with a relatively low average annual rainfall of approximately 331 mm. Soils in this landscape are generally grey shallow and deep sandy duplex soils, sandy loams, and calcareous loamy earths on the valley floors.

This project sequesters carbon by establishing a new plantation forest on what is likely former agricultural land. By dedicating this area to the commercial harvesting of wood products, the project diversifies the local land use from traditional broadacre cropping while actively drawing down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as the trees accumulate biomass.
