Woolingar Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Woolingar Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located on the "Woolingar" property, approximately 40 kilometers north-northwest of Coonamble in the Orana region of New South Wales. Registered on January 22, 2026, the project covers a substantial area of 3,417 hectares. The site is situated along the Castlereagh Highway, positioned between the towns of Coonamble and Walgett.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. Specifically, this project is registered to increase soil carbon by applying nutrients to the land, typically in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers, to address material deficiencies. This approach aims to boost plant growth and biomass, which in turn draws more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil system.

The Coonamble region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450–500mm, though this can be variable. The landscape is dominated by the productive "black soil plains," consisting primarily of Vertosols (cracking clay soils) and Red Chromosols. These heavy clay soils are naturally fertile and have a high capacity for carbon storage, making them well-suited for soil carbon projects. The surrounding land use is predominantly mixed farming, combining broadacre cropping (such as wheat and chickpeas) with sheep and cattle grazing.

The project proponent is Loam Carbon Pty Ltd, a company specializing in microbial soil carbon technologies. While the registered activity focuses on nutrient application, Loam Carbon is widely recognized for developing microbial seed coatings designed to enhance the stability of carbon stored in the soil. The "Woolingar" property itself is a known location in the Leichhardt County cadastral division.
