Barnett Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Barnett Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located in the Isaac local government area of Central Queensland, approximately 50km north of Blackwater. It was registered in February 2026 and covers a substantial 8,918.37 hectares.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology involve implementing new or materially different agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. These increases are then verified through rigorous soil sampling and modelling over time.

The Isaac region of Central Queensland is primarily known for its large-scale beef cattle grazing properties and coal mining operations. The environment features a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall. The soils in this part of the Brigalow Belt are generally deep, cracking clay soils (vertosols), which are highly suitable for pasture growth and carbon sequestration when managed effectively.

To generate carbon credits, proponents Peter Frame and Toni Frame are altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing across the property. This typically involves shifting from continuous grazing to rotational or time-controlled grazing, which gives pastures adequate rest to promote vegetation cover, improve root biomass, and ultimately enhance overall soil health.

An interesting note about the project is that it is supported by Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, one of Australia's prominent agricultural soil carbon developers. Additionally, the proponents have strong ties to the regional community; Toni Frame has notably served as the President of the Rockhampton Grammar School Boarder Parent Association.
