Project Information:

Penola Plantations 2026 – P26-5 Nangwarry Central is a plantation forestry project located near the town of Nangwarry in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, approximately 32 kilometers north of Mount Gambier and 19 kilometers south of Penola. Registered in September 2025, the project covers 121.42 hectares of land within the famous "Green Triangle," a premier forestry district known for its extensive softwood plantations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. It specifically engages in "avoided conversion" activities (Schedule 3 of the methodology). This implies the project area consists of plantation land that was harvested, or was due to be harvested, and faced a viable risk of being converted to non-forested agricultural land, such as grazing or cropping, which is a common trend in the region due to high agricultural land values. Instead of converting the land, the proponent commits to re-establishing and maintaining the plantation forest for commercial harvesting, thereby sequestering carbon in the timber and soil.

Environmentally, the Nangwarry region is ideally suited for forestry, characterised by high reliable rainfall (averaging over 700mm annually) and well-drained soil profiles often consisting of sandy topsoils over clay or limestone (Podzols and Chromosols). The project is managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd on behalf of "The trustee for Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust," an investment vehicle likely linked to institutional timberland ownership. The inclusion of "2026" in the project name suggests the planting cohort or the financial year associated with the re-establishment of the forest stand.
