Project Information:
Penola Plantations 2026 – P26-5 Nangwarry Central is a plantation forestry project located at Nangwarry in the Green Triangle region of South Australia, approximately 30km northwest of Mount Gambier. It was registered in September 2025 and covers 121.42ha.
Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation to long-rotation forests, or maintaining existing ones. Standard requirements dictate that the project must clearly prove the forestry continues commercial harvesting of wood products while demonstrating that the area was at risk of conversion.
The Green Triangle region is widely known for its extensive commercial forestry industry, specifically Pinus radiata, as well as cattle grazing and broadacre cropping. The Nangwarry area is considered a moderate to high rainfall zone, averaging 645 to 760 mm annually. Soils in the district are generally deep, highly leached sandy podosols that sit over clay or limestone subsoils.
This project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land (such as agricultural pasture) and continuing the plantation. The project's proponent, Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd, manages the massive 47,000-hectare Penola Plantations estate across South Australia and Victoria. The company runs a "Special Values Management Plan" across these estates, ensuring the protection of native flora, cultural heritage sites, and threatened species like koalas that live interspersed among the commercial timber.
