Project Information:

AA2025R_ParsonsL_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry carbon project located in the Derwent Valley region of Tasmania, approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Hobart and near the town of Bushy Park. Registered on September 8, 2025, the project covers a total area of 76.55 hectares. The surrounding region is characterized by a mix of intensive agriculture, particularly hop farming for which Bushy Park is famous, and commercial forestry operations supported by the Derwent River system.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology allows for carbon credits to be generated by establishing new plantation forests or managing existing ones to increase carbon storage, while still allowing for commercial timber harvesting. Specifically, this project engages in "avoided conversion," preventing existing plantation land from being converted to non-forested uses (such as agriculture), alongside establishing new plantation areas. The strategy likely involves maintaining a rotation of trees (such as Eucalyptus nitens or Pinus radiata) that provides both wood products and long-term carbon sequestration.

Environmentally, the site sits within a temperate maritime climate zone. While the Derwent Valley exhibits a significant rainfall gradient, this specific location near Bushy Park typically benefits from moderate rainfall, averaging between 600mm and 800mm annually, which is sufficient to support productive forestry. The soils in the lower Derwent Valley are often fertile, consisting of clay-rich loams derived from basalt and alluvium, though surrounding slopes may feature podzolic soils typical of Tasmanian forestry landscapes.

An interesting aspect of this project is its proponent structure; it is managed by The Trust Company (Australia) Limited acting as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust, with SFM Environmental Solutions acting as the active participant. SFM is a prominent Tasmanian forest manager certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Responsible Wood standards, suggesting a focus on sustainable commercial harvest cycles alongside carbon credit generation.
