Project Information:
Wawu Dimbi Julaymba (Daintree River) Rainforest Planting Project is an environmental planting project located at Wawu Dimbi Farm along the Daintree River, approximately 25km north of Mossman in Far North Queensland. It was registered in August 2025 and covers 2.19ha.
Environmental planting projects involve establishing a permanent mixed-species planting of native trees and shrubs at a density of at least 200 stems per hectare to capture carbon from the atmosphere.
The Daintree River region is predominantly known for its significant conservation areas, notably the Daintree National Park and Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, alongside agricultural patches heavily historically used for sugar cane and beef cattle farming. The region is situated in the Wet Tropics and is classified as a high-rainfall area with pronounced summer dominance. Because of this intense climate, the local soils, which are primarily formed on alluvial floodplains, granites, and metamorphic rocks, are often highly weathered and subject to nutrient leaching.
This project establishes permanent plantings of a mix of native tree and shrub species that reflect the structure and composition of the local lowland tropical rainforest vegetation community. It is uniquely managed by the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, with on-ground works undertaken entirely by their Forester Team of Traditional Owners. In addition to capturing carbon, the project is a deeply cultural initiative aiming to restore land significance for the Eastern Kuku Yalanji (Julaywarra clan) people, enhance ecological connectivity from the coastal wetlands to the mountains, and provide critical habitat for endangered wildlife, even allowing the project to generate "Cassowary Credits" via Eco-Markets Australia.
