Yambuk Soil Improvement Project
ERF205142
Project Information:
The Yambuk Soil Improvement Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located on the 'Yambuk' property, which forms part of the larger Kaiuroo Aggregation, approximately 125km northwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Registered in September 2025, the project covers a significant area of 8,528 hectares. It is distinct from the Victorian town of the same name; this project operates within the Fitzroy Basin, a region renowned for extensive beef cattle grazing and cropping operations along the Mackenzie River.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology. This method credits carbon abatement by measuring increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from a change in agricultural management. The specific activity for this project involves a transition from historical "set stocking" (continuous grazing) to a time-controlled grazing system. By increasing the intensity of grazing for shorter durations and allowing longer rest periods for pastures, the proponent aims to stimulate greater biomass growth and root development, which in turn sequesters more carbon into the soil profile.
Environmentally, the region is characterized by a sub-tropical, semi-arid climate with summer-dominant rainfall. The location along the Mackenzie River suggests the presence of productive alluvial soils and heavy cracking clays (Vertosols), which are capable of holding significant soil organic carbon when managed correctly.
The proponent, Rural Funds Management Limited (acting for RF Active), is the responsible entity for the ASX-listed Rural Funds Group (RFF). The inclusion of Carbon West Pty Ltd as a participant suggests they are acting as the carbon service provider or technical consultant for the project. Interestingly, the Yambuk property was part of a major acquisition by RFF in 2021 intended to demonstrate productivity improvements through active management strategies like those employed in this carbon project.
