Plantation Pine Products Australia - PPP5
ERF204996
Project Information:
Plantation Pine Products Australia - PPP5 is a plantation forestry project located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, with project areas distributed across the region surrounding the town of Oberon. Registered in July 2025, the project covers approximately 1,197 hectares. The specific sites are situated in a radius around Oberon, spanning from the northwest near O'Connell to the southeast near the Kanangra-Boyd National Park area.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits carbon sequestration achieved by establishing new plantation forests on land that has previously been used for other agricultural purposes, such as grazing or cropping. By converting this land to timber plantations (typically Pinus radiata or Eucalyptus nitens in this region), the project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while simultaneously producing commercial timber products.
The Oberon region is widely recognized as a hub for forestry and softwood timber processing in Australia. The area is characterized by a cool temperate climate with high rainfall (typically exceeding 800mm annually), which is ideal for plantation growth. The soils in the Central Tablelands are generally acidic Kurosols and structured Dermosols (clay and loam types), which support vigorous tree growth but can be limiting for some intensive cropping without amendment. The surrounding land use is a mix of cattle and sheep grazing, alongside extensive state and private pine forests.
Plantation Pine Products, associated with the project proponent Group Energy Pty Ltd, is a company owned by Borg (Australian Panels). This vertical integration means the timber grown in these projects is likely destined for the major wood processing facilities in Oberon, which manufacture structural flooring, particleboard, and other building materials. This project is part of a broader sequence of "PPP" projects (such as PPP1 and PPP2) aiming to secure long-term fibre supply for these local manufacturing assets while utilizing the carbon market to support the establishment costs.
