Cooeeanna Carbon Project 5
ERF203818
Project Information:
Cooeeanna Carbon Project 5 is a soil carbon project located at the Cooeeanna homestead, approximately 9km southwest of the town of Lock on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Registered on September 12, 2025, the project covers 163.54 hectares of agricultural land. The region is predominantly used for cereal cropping (such as wheat and barley) and sheep grazing.
The project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology. This involves measuring the baseline levels of carbon in the soil and implementing new management activities to sequester more carbon over time. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address nutrient deficiencies, which helps stimulate plant growth and soil biology.
Environmentally, the Lock area is characterized by a semi-arid climate with low annual rainfall (typically 300-400mm). The soils in this central part of the Eyre Peninsula are often calcareous earths or sandy loams over clay, frequently containing high levels of limestone. Local farming often involves "stone picking" to manage the rocky limestone terrain. The "Cooeeanna" property appears to have multiple active carbon projects (such as Project 9) and maintains a social media presence showcasing daily farm operations like seeding and rock rowing.
