Rooney's Plantation

ERF202473

Project Information:

Rooney's Plantation is a Plantation Forestry project located at Ouse in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, approximately 65km northwest of Hobart. It was registered in June 2025 and covers an area of 344.54 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation plantations, or maintaining existing plantations to avoid conversion to non-forested land. A standard requirement of this methodology is that the plantations must be maintained for the commercial harvesting of wood products.

The Central Highlands area is known for active forestry operations and mixed agricultural farming. The region experiences a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons, with some local areas receiving lower rainfall due to being in a rain shadow. Soils in Tasmania vary widely but are predominantly Dermosols and Organosols, with some pockets of deep, basalt-derived Ferrosols that are highly valued for agricultural and forestry productivity.

This project sequesters carbon by maintaining an existing plantation forest and converting it from a short-rotation to a long-rotation forest for commercial harvesting. The project proponent, Eastern Tiers Pty Ltd, is an established Tasmanian agricultural entity that integrates carbon projects into broader mixed-farming operations. The project has nominated a 25-year permanence period and is managed with the assistance of agent Samuel Bean.
