Rooney's Plantation

Rooney's Plantation is a plantation forestry project located across multiple sites in Tasmania, spanning the Central Highlands approximately 75km northwest of Hobart and the Break O'Day region roughly 80km east of Launceston. It was registered in June 2025 and covers a combined area of 618.84 hectares.

Projects operating under the Plantation Forestry methodology involve establishing a new plantation, converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation forest, or maintaining a plantation to avoid its conversion to non-forested land. To meet standard methodology requirements, these forests must be actively established and maintained for the commercial harvesting of wood products.

The Central Highlands and Break O'Day regions of Tasmania are traditionally known for sheep and cattle grazing, as well as extensive commercial forestry operations. The Central Highlands typically experiences moderate rainfall and features podzolic soils, whereas the Break O'Day region in the state's northeast receives higher rainfall and contains highly fertile dermosol and ferrosol (basalt) soil profiles.

This project specifically sequesters carbon by converting an existing short-rotation plantation to a long-rotation cycle, and by ensuring new and harvested plantations are not cleared for non-forested land use. The project is managed by proponent Eastern Tiers Pty Ltd, with Samuel Bean acting as the registered agent. Additionally, on July 20, 2026, a variation to the project area was approved, incorporating new tracts of land into the active project space.
