FarmStrong Mallee Reforestation

FarmStrong Mallee Reforestation is a targeted reforestation project located in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia, approximately 30km east of the Perenjori township. Registered in May 2025, the project covers 1,620 hectares in the state’s Mid West region. The surrounding landscape is part of the northern wheatbelt, an area heavily utilized for dryland cropping and sheep grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2024. This specific method credits landholders for establishing permanent native forest cover on land that has been clear of forest for at least five years. Unlike generic environmental plantings, this project specifically focuses on mallee eucalypt species. These drought-hardy trees are well-suited to the region and are required to achieve a crown cover of at least 20% and a mature height of 2 meters.

Environmentally, the Perenjori region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with low winter-dominant rainfall, typically averaging between 300mm and 400mm annually. Soils in the area are generally sandy loams, red earths, or sandplains, which can be susceptible to wind erosion and salinity, issues that deep-rooted perennial vegetation like mallee helps to mitigate.

A notable feature of the FarmStrong project is its "silvopastoral" design, intended to function alongside active agriculture. Local government records indicate the property has historically been used for sheep grazing. The project proposal outlines the retention of grazing and cropping on parts of the land, with managed grazing permitted within the planting areas once the trees are sufficiently established. This approach allows the proponent, Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd (acting for landholders D&D Farming Pty Ltd), to improve land condition and shelter livestock while generating carbon credits.
