Caloora Carbon Project

ERF202272

Project Information:

The Caloora Carbon Project is a plantation forestry initiative located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Situated within the Shire of Plantagenet, the project spans approximately 1,282 hectares and is centred near the locality of Tenterden, roughly 25 kilometres north of Mount Barker and 80 kilometres inland from Albany.

Registered in April 2025, the project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology. This specific methodology allows landholders to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by integrating commercial timber operations with carbon sequestration. The Caloora project incorporates two distinct activities: 'avoided conversion,' which prevents an existing plantation from being cleared for agriculture, and the establishment of a new plantation forest. By maintaining these trees for commercial harvest, the project sequesters carbon in the biomass of the forest and in the long-term wood products generated after harvest.

The surrounding region is well-regarded for its productive agricultural land, supporting a mix of sheep grazing, cropping, and extensive viticulture. The area enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with reliable winter rainfall, making it a prime zone for Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) forestry. The local terrain typically features gravelly loams and sandy duplex soils, often referred to as "marri soils," which provide excellent drainage for forestry operations. The project is managed by the proponent Caloora (WA) Pty Ltd, with service support from The Carbon Farming Foundation.
