Moranbah Power Project

ERF202222

Project Information:

The Moranbah Power Project is a Coal Mine Waste Gas (CMWG) project located approximately 5km north of the town of Moranbah in the Bowen Basin, Queensland. Registered on March 21, 2025, the project is operated by Carbon Logica Pty Ltd, a joint venture between Xcoal and Helmont Energy. The facility is associated with the 12.8MW Moranbah Power Station, which Carbon Logica acquired to capture and utilise waste mine gas from the surrounding coal mining operations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Coal Mine Waste Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology awards carbon credits (ACCUs) for capturing fugitive methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during coal mining, and converting it into carbon dioxide through combustion. Specifically, this project is a "displacement electricity production" activity. By using the captured gas to power electricity generators, the project not only reduces direct methane emissions but also exports power to the grid, displacing electricity that would otherwise be generated by more carbon-intensive fossil fuel sources.

The Moranbah region is characterized by a semi-arid, sub-tropical climate with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 600mm, falling predominantly in the summer months. The landscape features extensive cracking clay soils (Vertosols), which are typical of the Bowen Basin. While the broader region supports cattle grazing, the immediate area is heavily industrialised, serving as a central hub for Australia's steelmaking coal industry. The project represents a strategic partnership between Carbon Logica and QPM Energy, designed to secure low-cost gas supply and reduce the carbon intensity of local mining and industrial operations.
