Project Information:

AA2025R_PentlandL_S3 is a Plantation Forestry carbon project located in the West Tamar region of Tasmania, approximately 35km northwest of Launceston. It was registered in May 2025 and originally covered an area of 29.12 hectares, though a subsequent project variation in August 2025 allowed additional areas to be added.

Plantation forestry projects generally earn carbon credits by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation crops to long-rotation ones, or maintaining existing plantations. In this specific project, carbon is sequestered by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested land. Under the 2022 methodology determination, this means the proponent has committed to continuing the area's forestry operations rather than clearing the land for other agricultural purposes.

The West Tamar region is well known for a blend of productive land uses, including sheep and cattle grazing, cropping, viticulture, and forestry operations. The region is characterized by Tasmania's temperate, high-rainfall climate. Local soils feature a mix of podosols, podzols, and black clays overlying marine sediments, which provide excellent fertility for both intensive farming and the long-term sustainability of plantation trees.

An interesting facet of this project is its inclusion in the "ActivAcre" program. Developed by New Forests and managed locally by the project's agent, SFM Environmental Solutions, ActivAcre is an initiative that partners with Tasmanian farmers and landowners to transform underutilized agricultural land into high-integrity carbon and timber-producing assets. By participating in this program, the land receives long-term plantation management that provides the landowners with a diversified income stream, creates shelterbelts for livestock, and contributes to broader climate change mitigation goals.
