Tennyson source

Project Information:

Tennyson source is an environmental planting project located in the rural locality of Canyonleigh, approximately 25 kilometers west of Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Registered in August 2025, the project covers nearly 39 hectares of land in a region characterized by a mix of grazing properties, vineyards, and remnant native bushland.

The project operates under the 2024 'Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings' methodology, which focuses on establishing permanent native vegetation to sequester carbon. This involves planting a mix of local tree and shrub species, typically at a density of at least 200 stems per hectare, to mimic the structure of the surrounding natural forest communities. The Canyonleigh area generally experiences a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, and the soils are often sandstone-derived sandy loams or clays, which differ slightly from the rich basalts found further east in the Highlands.

Managed by Landcare Australia Limited, the project emphasizes biodiversity co-benefits alongside carbon sequestration. By using a diverse mix of species local to the area, the planting is designed to create habitat and improve landscape connectivity. While "Tennyson" is also the name of a locality in the Hawkesbury region, the project's coordinates place it firmly in the Southern Highlands, suggesting the name "Tennyson source" likely refers to a specific property feature, such as the headwaters of a local watercourse or a historic property name.
