Thebe AWT Project

Project Information:

The Thebe AWT Project is a waste management initiative located in the Northern Territory, specifically registered under the postcode 0822. While this postcode covers a vast geographic area of the "Top End" including remote communities like Jabiru and Gunbalanya, it notably includes East Arm, the primary industrial and port precinct for the city of Darwin. Given the industrial scale required for a new Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) facility, the project is likely situated within this logistics hub, approximately 15km southeast of the Darwin CBD. The project was registered in March 2025.

The project operates under the Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) 2015 methodology. This involves diverting mixed solid waste (MSW) that would otherwise be destined for landfill into a specialised processing facility. The facility utilises technologies such as enclosed composting, anaerobic digesters (capturing methane for combustion), or the production of Process Engineered Fuel (PEF). By preventing organic waste from decaying anaerobically in landfills, the project significantly reduces methane emissions.

If located in the East Arm industrial zone, the area is characterised by reclaimed land and heavy industrial infrastructure, distinct from the surrounding tropical savanna landscape. The region experiences a tropical climate with a distinct wet season (November to April) featuring high rainfall and monsoonal activity, and a dry season the rest of the year.

A note on the project name: "Thebe" is a moon of Jupiter. The proponent, Corporate Carbon Advisory, frequently uses celestial names for its project portfolio (e.g., Himalia, Elara), suggesting this facility is part of a broader, structured investment into waste abatement infrastructure.
