Project Information:
AA2025R_LauncestonNorthEastL_S1S2 is a Plantation Forestry project located primarily in the Launceston local government area in Tasmania. Spanning across multiple parcels, the closest site is situated approximately 25km north-east of Launceston, with other sites stretching south towards the Campbell Town region and east towards Swansea. The project was registered in May 2025 and originally covered 198.60 hectares, with additional areas added via a project area variation in August 2025.
Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology sequester carbon by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation plantations (such as those used for woodchips) into long-rotation plantations (for sawlogs), or maintaining existing plantations. These projects require a commercial intent for harvesting wood products, maintaining appropriate stocking densities, and effectively storing carbon in both the growing landscape and the resulting harvested wood.
The region encompassing north-east and central-eastern Tasmania is well-regarded for commercial forestry, sheep and cattle grazing, and mixed cropping. The environment benefits from a reliable, moderate-to-high rainfall climate. The local soils generally range from highly fertile, deep basalts (ferrosols) in the north-east to productive clay loams and podzolic soils in the central and eastern tracts, offering excellent conditions for vigorous eucalypt or pine plantation growth.
An interesting aspect of this project is its association with SFM Environmental Solutions and the "ActivAcre" program. This program is designed to partner with local landowners to offer competitive lease rates by focusing on the combined value of both carbon sequestration and commercial timber products. It allows farmers to flexibly integrate trees into their existing agricultural landscapes without upfront fees, diversifying their revenue while creating valuable shelterbelts for livestock and improving water efficiency.
