Project Information:
AA2025R_LauncestonNorthEastL_S1S2 is a plantation forestry project located across multiple parcels in northern and eastern Tasmania, situated generally north-east of the major city of Launceston. It was registered in May 2025 and currently covers an area of 198.60 hectares, which includes additional land integrated during a project area variation in August 2025.
Plantation Forestry methodology projects generate carbon credits by capturing and storing carbon from the atmosphere through the establishment of new plantation forests or by converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation cycles. Carbon continues to be sequestered in the living trees, plantation debris, and harvested wood products, with the projected abatement typically calculated over a 25-year crediting period using the government's FullCAM software.
The northern Tasmanian region surrounding Launceston relies heavily on land-based primary production, where the dominant land uses are cattle and sheep grazing, urban development, and extensive production forestry, particularly at higher elevations. The local climate experiences moderate to high rainfall, heavily concentrated during wet winter months. The environment features diverse geology, with soils commonly including deep gradational duplex soils, Tertiary clays and gravels, and highly productive red soils.
This project sequesters carbon through both the establishment of new timber stands and the conversion of existing short-rotation forests to long-rotation forests for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Interestingly, this project is part of a larger portfolio governed by The Trust Company as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust and managed by SFM Environmental Solutions. This overarching afforestation program is strategically designed to allow local landowners to lease underutilised sections of their farms specifically for sustainable timber production and carbon generation.
