The project involves the installation and operation of electricity production devices designed to capture fugitive methane from coal mine waste gas, emissions that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere for safety reasons. By combusting this methane to generate electricity, the project displaces the need for grid-supplied power, thereby creating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) through both the destruction of potent greenhouse gases and the displacement of fossil-fuel-heavy grid electricity. The project proponent, Carbon Logica Pty Ltd, is a joint venture between Xcoal and Helmont Energy, established to provide carbon abatement services specifically for the mining sector.
