Tahmoor South WCMG Electricity Generation Facility

ERF201239

Project Information:

Tahmoor South WCMG Electricity Generation Facility is a coal mine waste gas project located at the Tahmoor Colliery, approximately 75km southwest of Sydney, New South Wales. Registered in March 2025, the project operates within the Wollondilly Shire, a region characterized by a mix of historic coal mining operations, poultry farming, and market gardening. The local environment typically experiences moderate rainfall and features soils predominantly derived from Wianamatta Shale, consisting largely of reactive clays and loam.

The project operates under the Coal Mine Waste Gas methodology, specifically focusing on displacement electricity production. This involves capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during underground coal extraction, that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere. The captured gas is combusted in electricity generation units to produce power. By doing so, the project achieves two forms of abatement: it converts methane into less harmful carbon dioxide and generates electricity that displaces power otherwise drawn from the grid, which is often more carbon-intensive.

An interesting facet of this project is its proponent, Carbon Logica Pty Ltd, which is a joint venture between LMS Energy and Xcoal Group established to provide abatement services to the resources sector. The facility is associated with the Tahmoor South Coal Project, an expansion targeting the Bulli Coal Seam, known in the Southern Coalfields for being particularly "gassy." The generation facility is critical for reducing the mine's Scope 1 emissions as it extends its operational life into the 2030s.
