Southern Cross Yilgarn North Carbon Project

Southern Cross Yilgarn North Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located approximately 35km northwest of Southern Cross in the Yilgarn Shire of Western Australia. It was registered in May 2025 and covers 9,294.92 ha.

Plantation forestry projects sequester carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantation forests for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Projects under this methodology must adhere to specific management practices and achieve standard tree stocking densities to ensure the successful establishment of a continuous forest canopy.

The Yilgarn region is situated in the eastern Wheatbelt and is primarily known for wheat cropping, sheep grazing, and extensive gold and iron ore mining operations. The area is considered semi-arid with a low average annual rainfall of around 300mm, and soils generally consist of undulating sandplains, sandy loams, and some heavier clay in the valley floors.

This project was set up to sequester carbon by establishing a new commercial plantation forest. Given the low-rainfall environment, establishing such a large-scale commercial forestry project typically requires drought-hardy species specifically adapted to sandy soils. The project is jointly managed by Growth Carbon Pty Ltd and Outback Carbon Pty Ltd following a proponent variation in May 2026, and it has officially nominated a 25-year permanence period.
