Monkey Creek Farm Soil Project
ERF200576
Project Information:
Monkey Creek Farm Soil Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located approximately 15km northwest of the township of Taralga in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in April 2025, the project covers a project area of nearly 330 hectares. The surrounding Upper Lachlan region is a significant agricultural hub, historically dominated by fine wool and beef cattle grazing, with some areas dedicated to potato cropping and forestry.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration methodology, which credits landholders for increasing carbon stocks in their soil. To achieve this, the project proponent, Carbon Fix Pty Limited, has implemented changes to land management practices. These specific activities include altering grazing intensity to maintain better ground cover and applying lime to the soil. The application of lime is particularly relevant in this region, as the native granite and sedimentary-derived soils of the Southern Tableland are often naturally acidic; correcting this acidity is crucial for unlocking nutrient availability and boosting the biomass production required to sequester carbon.
Environmentally, the site sits within a high-reliability rainfall zone, typically receiving between 700mm and 850mm annually, which supports vigorous pasture growth when managed correctly. While the Taralga area is famous for its pockets of fertile basalt "chocolate" soils, the requirement for lime amelioration on this property suggests the land likely consists of the more common yellow podzolic or granite-derived loam soil types found in the broader tablelands landscape. The project is part of a growing portfolio of soil carbon assets managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited in the region.
