Western Treefarm Project 2B (WTP2B)

Project Information:

Western Treefarm Project 2B (WTP2B) is a plantation forestry project located in the Kojonup local government area, approximately 20km north of Frankland River in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was registered in April 2025 and currently covers 967.20 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects generate carbon credits by establishing new plantation forests or converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation forests. These methodologies require the active management of the plantation forests for the commercial harvesting of wood products. The WTP2B project sequesters carbon by combining both of these permitted activities, establishing new commercial plantations and transitioning existing short-rotation forest areas into long-rotation commercial forests.

The Great Southern region, particularly around Frankland River and Kojonup, is widely recognized for its diverse agricultural land uses, including sheep grazing, broadacre cropping, commercial timber plantations, and viticulture. The environment features a Mediterranean climate characterized by moderate to high winter-dominant rainfall. The local soils generally consist of well-drained gravelly lateritic loams, sandy loams, and clay loams, providing excellent conditions for deep-rooted commercial forestry.

This project is operated by Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd (MWO), an established participant in the Australian forestry and woodchip export supply chain. Headquartered in Melbourne with regional operations in Bunbury, WA, and Portland, VIC, MWO has actively managed plantation assets in Australia since 1995. Interestingly, the project proponent officially changed its corporate name from Mitsui Bussan Woodchip Oceania Pty Ltd to MWO on April 1, 2025, just weeks prior to registering this project, to reflect a strategic expansion into greener, sustainable carbon and forestry solutions. Additionally, project records indicate that on December 19, 2025, a variation was submitted to alter the project area, removing some previously listed areas from the project boundaries.
