Pallal Carbon Project 2

Project Information:
Pallal Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the rural locality of Pallal, approximately 25km southwest of Bingara in the Gwydir Shire of New South Wales. Registered in April 2025, the project covers a land area of roughly 145 hectares. The project is situated within the North West Slopes region, an area historically renowned for its "Golden Triangle" of highly productive agricultural land, supporting a mix of cattle grazing and cropping operations.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology. This method credits landholders for increasing soil carbon stocks through changes in land management. To participate, the proponent must implement "new or materially different" activities compared to the historic baseline. For Pallal Carbon Project 2, these activities involve a comprehensive soil remediation and grazing strategy: applying gypsum to manage sodic soils, applying lime for acidity, adding nutrients to address deficiencies, and altering stocking rates to improve vegetation cover.
Environmentally, the Pallal region features a temperate to semi-arid climate with rainfall that is generally summer-dominant but variable, averaging around 700mm annually. The local landscape is defined by the Gwydir River catchment, often containing fertile alluvial soils (Dermosols) on the flats and basalt-derived clays (Vertosols) or red earths (Ferrosols) on the slopes. However, the project's specific focus on applying gypsum and lime suggests the presence of sodic or acidic soil constraints, which can limit pasture growth if left unmanaged.
An interesting note is that "Pallal Station" is a historic pastoral run in the district, dating back to the 19th century. Modern operations in the immediate vicinity, such as "Mitiamo at Pallal," focus on cattle grazing and tropical pasture improvement, aligning well with the carbon project's activities of boosting soil health to support sustainable stocking rates. The project is managed by Agriprove, a leading Australian soil carbon developer known for utilizing digital soil sampling and modeling technologies.
