Bald Rock Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Bald Rock Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located at Bald Rock Station, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Tenterfield in the New England region of New South Wales. Registered in December 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 939.91 hectares. The property is situated near the renowned Bald Rock National Park and Boonoo Boonoo National Park, an area celebrated for its dramatic granite landscapes. While the primary land use is agricultural grazing, the property is also known locally for its unique farm-stay accommodation featuring converted train carriages.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Specifically, the project activities focus on applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. This approach aims to boost pasture productivity and root growth, thereby sequestering more atmospheric carbon into the soil profile. The project is managed by Crescent Grazing Pty Ltd with assistance from Precision Pastures Pty Ltd, a specialist in soil carbon baselining and agronomy.

The Tenterfield region is characterized by a cool temperate climate with summer-dominant rainfall, offering generally favorable conditions for pasture growth compared to drier inland areas. The local environment typically features granitic soils, often sandy loams derived from the extensive granite geology of the New England Batholith. These soils can be highly responsive to nutrient management, making them suitable candidates for carbon sequestration projects that address specific fertility constraints.
