Project Information:

AA2025R_WoodsdaleP_S3 is a plantation forestry project located at Woodsdale, approximately 32km south-east of Oatlands and 50km north-east of Hobart in Tasmania's Southern Midlands region. It was registered in November 2024 and covers 135.35ha.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation harvest plantations to long-rotation ones, or avoiding the clearing of existing plantations for non-forested land use. To meet standard methodology requirements, the project area must be managed as a commercial timber plantation, consist of appropriate commercial timber species, and maintain specific tree stocking densities.

The Southern Midlands area is known for diverse agriculture, including sheep and cattle grazing, cropping, and extensive commercial forestry operations. The environment is characterised by a cool-temperate climate with moderate annual rainfall generally ranging between 500mm and 1000mm depending on elevation. Local soil types are varied but frequently feature texture-contrast profiles such as Chromosols and Kurosols, which consist of sandy loams over a clay subsoil and require careful management to prevent waterlogging and erosion.

This project sequesters carbon specifically by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested land. Interestingly, the site originally covered around 129 hectares but underwent a variation in July 2025 to expand the project area. It is part of a broader institutional investment portfolio managed under The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust, with operational support from SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd. According to market platform data, the site is estimated to sequester roughly 236 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
