Project Information:
AA2025R_WoodsdaleP_S3 is a plantation forestry project located in the rural locality of Woodsdale, approximately 60km northeast of Hobart, Tasmania. Registered in November 2024, the project covers an area of roughly 135 hectares. In July 2025, the project underwent a variation to include additional land within its boundary, expanding its scope.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the "avoided conversion" activity, which credits the carbon sequestered by plantation forests that were at significant risk of being converted to non-forest land uses, such as agriculture. By maintaining the plantation trees instead of clearing them for pasture or crops, the project ensures continued carbon storage in the biomass.
The Woodsdale region is situated in Tasmania's Southern Midlands/East Coast transition zone, an area characterized by a cool-temperate climate. The landscape supports a mix of grazing (sheep and cattle) and forestry operations. Rainfall in this district is generally moderate, often falling between 600mm and 800mm annually, supporting dry to wet sclerophyll forest types. Soils in the vicinity are typically texture-contrast clays or loams, often derived from the Jurassic Dolerite that dominates much of the central and eastern Tasmanian geology.
The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forestry and carbon management firm, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited (as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust). SFM is known for managing large-scale natural assets and has been active in aggregating smaller plantation estates into viable carbon projects.
