Spring Hills Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Spring Hills Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located at the "Spring Hills" station in Rockyview, approximately 25 kilometres north of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Registered in June 2025, the project covers 952 hectares of agricultural land primarily used for beef cattle grazing.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which allows landholders to earn carbon credits by increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) levels. To achieve this, the proponent, Rolfe and Zeil Pastoral Pty Ltd, is implementing changes to grazing management, such as altering stocking rates, duration, or intensity. This "hybrid" methodology combines physical soil sampling with computer modelling to measure carbon abatement over time, incentivizing regenerative practices that improve soil health and vegetation cover.

The Rockyview and Milman region features a sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall, typical of the Central Queensland grazing belt. The landscape is characterized by open woodlands and grasslands supported by clay and loam soils, which are well-suited for the Brangus cattle operations run by the proponents. The project involves the participation of Elders Rural Services Australia, likely acting as a service provider or aggregator to support the complex measurement and reporting requirements.
