Western Tree Farms 2

ERF198310

Project Information:

Western Tree Farms 2 is a plantation forestry project located across sites in the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia, with parcels situated near Bridgetown and Cranbrook, approximately 92km north of Albany. It was registered in January 2025 and covers an area of 675.79 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones, or maintaining pre-existing plantations. This specific project achieves its carbon abatement by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested land, ensuring the trees continue to capture carbon.

The Cranbrook and Bridgetown areas are well known for broadacre agriculture, livestock farming, viticulture, and significant timber and forestry operations. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate and is considered a moderate to high rainfall area, averaging around 794mm annually. The local environment features a wide diversity of soil types, ranging from well-drained gravelly marri loams to deep sands over clay and sandy duplex soils.

The project proponent, Wespine Industries Pty Ltd, is a major regional softwood processing company based in Dardanup. Wespine manages Pinus radiata (radiata pine) on long-term 30-year rotations to produce sustainable structural, packaging, and landscaping timber. An interesting note regarding this specific project is that on July 8, 2025, a formal variation was made to the project boundary, with certain previously listed areas being officially removed from the total project area.
