Western Tree Farms 2
ERF198310
Project Information:
Western Tree Farms 2 is a Plantation Forestry project spanning across multiple parcels in Western Australia's South West and Great Southern regions. The project locations include sites approximately 15km west of Bridgetown and 8km southwest of Frankland River. It was registered in January 2025 by Wespine Industries Pty Ltd and covers a total area of 675.79 hectares.
Plantation forestry projects under this methodology determination sequester carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested agricultural land. Standard requirements under this framework dictate that the land must be maintained as a forest system indefinitely or for the permanence period, which involves managing regular harvest and replanting cycles, ensuring a viable tree stocking density, and following strict silvicultural practices.
The surrounding areas of Bridgetown and Frankland River are heavily utilized for forestry operations, cattle and sheep grazing, and increasingly, viticulture and olive farming. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate classified as a high rainfall zone, offering ideal growing conditions for both agriculture and timber. The local soils typically consist of ironstone gravels, sandy loams, and lateritic profiles commonly found in the native jarrah and karri forest belts.
The project proponent, Wespine Industries, is a major local softwood sawmill operator based in Dardanup. They are using plantation carbon projects to expand the Australian plantation forest estate and secure their supply of renewable timber products, which act as a carbon-negative building material, while pursuing the company's broader goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Additionally, project records note that a variation was applied to the project on July 8, 2025, which saw some areas formally removed from the initial project boundaries.
