Carlowrie Soil Carbon Project

The Carlowrie Soil Carbon Project is a Soil Organic Carbon sequestration initiative located near the rural village of Attunga, approximately 20 kilometers north of Tamworth in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales. Registered in September 2024, the project covers a considerable landholding of 1,444 hectares. The project area operates under the stewardship of Camlin Investments Pty Limited, an entity commercially linked to the "Carlowrie Cattle Co," indicating the property is likely utilized for beef cattle grazing and mixed farming operations typical of the Liverpool Plains and Peel River catchments.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for increasing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. To achieve this, the proponent has committed to applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. This activity is designed to stimulate biomass growth and root development, which in turn sequesters atmospheric carbon into the soil profile. The methodology requires a rigorous baseline measurement of soil carbon levels followed by subsequent rounds of modelling or physical sampling to quantify the increase over time.

Environmentally, the Attunga and Tamworth region is characterized by a sub-humid climate with a summer-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging approximately 670mm annually. The landscape features a mix of fertile alluvial soils in the valleys, often Vertosols (cracking clays) or Chromosols, transitioning to lighter, skeletal soils on the ridges. These soil types generally respond well to nutrient management, making them suitable candidates for carbon sequestration projects. Notably, the project underwent a variation in December 2024 to remove specific areas from the project map, a common administrative step to exclude non-eligible land such as infrastructure, roads, or homesteads.
