Wattle Glen Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:

Wattle Glen Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas operation located at the Wattle Glen Waste Management Facility in Redbank Plains, approximately 12km east of Ipswich in Queensland. Registered on October 8, 2024, the project is operated by VELMS Joint Venture Pty Ltd. The project area encompasses the Wattle Glen landfill site, which sits within a region characterized by a mix of industrial waste management, former mining activities, and expanding residential development.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This specific project involves upgrading an existing landfill gas collection system to improve the capture and combustion of methane generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste. By expanding or enhancing the efficiency of the gas extraction network (e.g., installing new vertical wells or horizontal collectors), the project reduces fugitive emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, converting it into carbon dioxide through combustion.

The Redbank Plains area experiences a subtropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall. The local terrain has been significantly altered by human activity; the landfill itself occupies a former open-cut coal mine void, meaning the immediate "soil" context is engineered fill and disturbed ground, surrounded by the clay and sedimentary soils typical of the Ipswich Basin. An interesting aspect of this site is its dual history as a coal mine and now a waste facility; the "VELMS" proponent name suggests a joint venture involving Veolia, who has historically managed the site and operated previous gas capture projects there.
