Project Information:
Western Treefarm Project Phase 2A (WTP2A) is a plantation forestry project located in the Scott River region of Western Australia, approximately 30km east of Augusta and 40km south of Nannup. Registered in November 2024, the project currently covers around 970 hectares within the Shire of Nannup. A recent variation in December 2025 saw the addition of new areas to the project boundary, expanding its scope shortly after its initial registration.
The project operates under the Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically focusing on the conversion from short-rotation to long-rotation plantation forest. This activity involves changing the management of existing plantations, typically Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) originally grown for woodchips on a 10-15 year cycle, to a longer rotation period (often 25+ years) suitable for sawlogs. This extension allows the trees to grow larger and sequester significantly more carbon over their lifetime compared to the frequent harvesting and replanting cycles of short-rotation forestry.
The region is characterized by a high-rainfall Mediterranean climate, receiving over 900mm of rain annually, which is ideal for intensive forestry and agriculture. The landscape typically features flat to gently undulating terrain with soils ranging from ironstone gravels and sandy loams to the peaty sands characteristic of the Scott Coastal Plain. Land use in the immediate vicinity is dominated by commercial forestry, dairy farming, and grazing.
The project proponent, Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd (MWO), is a major player in the Australian forestry sector and manages a portfolio of carbon projects in the region, including phases 1, 1A, 2, and 2B. MWO utilizes these projects to generate high-integrity Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while maintaining commercial timber operations.
