Project Information:

Western Treefarm Project Phase 2A (WTP2A) is a plantation forestry project located at Nannup, approximately 288km south of Perth in Western Australia's south-west region. It was registered in November 2024 and covers 970.09 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantations, transitioning to permanent forests, or adjusting the management of existing plantations. This specific project involves converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. This approach increases the carbon stock stored in the forest biomass, debris, and the resulting harvested wood products, which is calculated using the government's FullCAM tool over a fixed 25-year crediting period.

The Nannup area is nestled in the Blackwood River Valley, a region well-known for its extensive historical and active timber and forestry operations, alongside agricultural land uses such as beef and dairy cattle grazing, and fruit orchards. The environment features a Mediterranean climate classified as high rainfall, typically averaging over 800mm annually. The soils in the region are deeply weathered and generally consist of loamy earths, ironstone gravels, deep sands, and loamy duplexes of loam and clay.

An interesting aspect of this project is its location within the south-western WA biodiversity hotspot; managing plantations for longer rotations in this area can aid in preserving ecological connectivity and reducing soil salinity. The project is managed by Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd, which oversees a large portfolio of multiple 'Western Treefarm' project phases across Western Australia. In December 2025, a variation was made to the project to add extra land area, expanding its overall footprint and sequestration potential.
