Western Treefarm Project Phase 2A (WTP2A)

Project Information:

Western Treefarm Project Phase 2A (WTP2A) is a plantation forestry project located in the Nannup local government area, approximately 40km south of the Nannup township in the South West region of Western Australia. It was registered in November 2024 and covers an area of 970.09 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects of this type involve the conversion of an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest. Standard methodology requirements dictate that the rotation length must be extended by at least 10 years. This change in management transitions the forest from producing short-term items like pulpwood to long-term wood products like sawlogs, ensuring that carbon remains sequestered for a longer period in both the living biomass and the harvested materials.

The Nannup region is known for extensive commercial forestry operations, as well as agriculture such as beef cattle grazing and dairy farming. The area is classified as a high rainfall zone with a Mediterranean climate, providing ideal conditions for substantial tree growth. Soils across this part of the state generally consist of lateritic gravels, sandy loams, and karri loams over clay subsoils.

The project is managed by Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd, a proponent that focuses on matching plant species to local soil compositions and climates to maximise wood fibre output and carbon abatement. Notably, on December 22, 2025, a variation was applied to the project to incorporate additional land areas into the project boundary.
